Surface Preparation

The surface preparation recommended for PRIME-TAR™ MC 46750 is to include removal of all oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, corrosion product and other foreign matters. This can be accomplished with hydroblasting, grit sweeping and with a variety of mechanical descaling tools. The minimum standard for non-immersion service is Steel Structures Painting Council Standard SSPC-SP-10 (near-white blast cleaning). For a heavy duty corrosion control system, the recommended surface preparation for immersion and non-immersion service is or SSPC-SP-10 primed with Glass Shield's Zinc-Shield moisture cure primer.

Mixing and Thinning

PRIME-TAR™ MC 46750 is a one component product supplied in 3 US gallons or 1 US gallon containers. The entire content of the container must be well mixed before application

Thinning is not normally required or desired; however, at lower temperatures, small amounts (10% or less) of Glass Shield GS UC 500S thinner can be added depending on local VOC and air quality regulations. Any solvent addition should be made after the one component product is thoroughly stirred.

The pot life or the "working pot" is up to 6 hours. After the paint is stirred and poured, immediately seal the original can. Higher temperatures or humidity will shorten the pot life. Do not apply over water or frozen surfaces.

Application Conditions

Industry standards are for the substrate temperatures to be above 10º C of the dew point. Condensation due to substrate temperatures below the dew point can cause fl ash rusting on prepared steel and interfere with proper adhesion to the substrate. Special application techniques may be required above or below normal application conditions.

Curing Schedule

Ventilate the substrate for 2 hours after application. Curing times are based on a 2.0-3.0 mil (50-75 micron) dry fi lm thickness. Higher fi lm thickness, insuffi cient ventilation or cooler temperatures will require longer cure times and could result in solvent entrapment and premature failure of the fi lm. Maximum recoat time is 5 days without special surface preparation. If you desire a longer recoat window, an additive can be added. Consult a Glass Shield representative for further information. If the maximum recoat time has been exceeded, the surface must be sanded or prepared with a brush off blast SSPCSP- 7 prior to the application of additional coats. INTER-SHIELD™ MC 46750 applied below 40ºF (4ºC) may temporarily soften for several hours, after temperatures rise to 60ºF (16º C). This is a normal condition and will not infl uence performance. Curing times given at 23ºC (73ºF) and 40% relative humidity. Higher or lower temperatures will affect drying times.

Dry to touch 4 hours
Hard 12 hours
Full cure 7 days
