Surface Preparation

The surface preparation recommended for INTER-SHIELD™ MC 46704 is to include removal of all oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxide, corrosion product and other foreign matters. This can be accomplished with hydroblasting, grit sweeping and with a variety of mechanical descaling tools. The minimum standard for steel is Steel Structures Painting Council Standard SSPC-SP-2 or SSPC-SP-3. The recommended surface preparation is SSPC-SP6.

Mixing and Thinning

INTER-SHIELD™ MC 46704 is a one component product supplied in 3 US gallons or 1 US gallon containers. The entire content of the container must be well mixed before application

Thinning is not normally required or desired; however, at lower temperatures, small amounts (10% or less) of Glass Shield GS UC 500S thinner can be added depending on local VOC and air quality regulations. Any solvent addition should be made after the one component product is thoroughly stirred.

The pot life or the "working pot" is up to 6 hours. After the paint is stirred and poured, immediately seal the original can. Higher temperatures or humidity will shorten the pot life. Do not apply over water or frozen surfaces.

Application Conditions

Industry standards are for the substrate temperatures to be above 10º C of the dew point. Condensation due to substrate temperatures below the dew point can cause flash rusting on prepared steel and interfere with proper adhesion to the substrate. Special application techniques may be required above or below normal application conditions.

Application

INTER-SHIELD™ MC 46704 can be applied by brush, roller or spray. De Vilbiss or equilavent equipment should be used. Airless spray: heavy duty 30:1 airless pump with tip size 0.017-0.021 in. at 3000 psi pressure with 3/8 in fluid hose maximum 50 ft lenght. Spray gun: similar to De Vilbiss 510, fluid tip 0.55-0.73 in. at 30-60 psi pressure. For HVLP applications, please refer and comply with equipment supplier's recommendations.

Curing Schedule

Ventilate the substrate for 2 hours after application. Curing times are based on a 2.0-3.0 mil (50-75 micron) dry film thickness. Higher film thickness, insufficient ventilation or cooler temperatures will require longer cure times and could result in solvent entrapment and premature failure of the film. Maximum recoat time is 5 days without special surface preparation. If you desire a longer recoat window, an additive can be added. Consult a Glass Shield representative for further information. If the maximum recoat time has been exceeded, the surface must be sanded or prepared with a brush off blast SSPCSP- 7 prior to the application of additional coats. INTER-SHIELD™ MC 46704 applied below 40ºF (4ºC) may temporarily soften for several hours, after temperatures rise to 60ºF (16º C). This is a normal condition and will not influence performance. Curing times given at 23ºC (73ºF) and 40% relative humidity. Higher or lower temperatures will affect drying times.

Dry to touch 3-4 hours
To recoat 3-6 hours

(Max. 12 hours before sanding)

Hard 8-12 hours
Full cure 7 days
